Insider TipsSo, you are planning a trip to Niagara and want to gain some valuable insight about where to go, eat, stay, park, play, etc?
We offer some helpful tips assembled by "insiders", that is, people who actually live in this area. Who better to gain special tips and knowledge from? Don't be caught in the tourist traps.
Closest Hotel To The Falls
For example, too many hotels claim to be the "closest" hotel to the Falls. Do you really think they all are the closest hotel to the falls? First of all, there are technically 3 waterfalls. The American Falls... The Bridal Veil Falls... and The Canadian (Horseshoe) Falls.
The American and Bridal Veil Falls are right next to each other, so they generally count as one waterfall. And, the views of the Falls are really only available from the Canadian side. In fact, the best view of the American Falls is from the Skylon Tower on the Canadian side.
And, while the American Falls is very beautiful, the land directly overlooking the American Falls is either parkland or private property with no developed hotel towers, so when you hear a hotel claiming to be "closest" to the Falls, they usually refer to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
Anyway, we could tell you which one is the closest hotel, but it's more fun to have you see with your very own eyes. View an Aerial Photo of the Closest Hotels to Niagara Falls
Parking
Wherever you see a parking meter, presume that you must pay 24 hours per day 7 days a week. Sorry. That's just the way it is in Niagara Falls. If you stay at a Fallsview or a premium hotel property, you can generally park in their lots, though you may want to inquire ahead about any parking costs. Generally, motels do not charge for parking, hotels do. Most Fallsview hotels have shuttles that will take you to various points of interest throughout the city, so best advice is to leave your car parked and either walk or take the shuttles.
However, here's a great tip from the locals. Park for free at the Fallsview Casino Resort parking garage (as long as you have a Players Advantage Card, which are free to obtain anyway, so get one!). The locals who frequent the Fallsview district already know this parking tip and we park for free all the time. This is subject to change of course depending on the Fallsview Casino Resort's policies, but for the time-being, take advantage of this!
Avoid: parking right by the Falls, on Clifton Hill.
Where To Eat
As a local, diehard foody, the new favorite restaurant in town is The Keg at Embassy Suites. Enjoy succulent steaks with a great view of the Falls right from your table. The Skylon also offers superb views in their rotating dining room. If you want sushi, then 17 Noir has the best in town, though it is a bit expensive. If you don't mind taking a trip off the beaten path, Yukiguni is close to the Fallsview district, but much less expensive.
