Shaw Festival TheatreThe Shaw Festival Theatre, located in picturesque Niagara-on-the-lake, provides theatre enthusiasts with some of the most marvelous performances in the world. The Shaw Festival believes that the ability to express ideas creatively adds immense quality to life. Art and artistic expression is of great importance to the world and the Shaw Festival continues to contribute with its artistic ideas.
When the Shaw Festival Theatre first began production in 1962 it was to produce the works of Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries. The Shaw Festival Theatre is an art theatre and is recognized as a non-profit and charitable organization.
Shaw Festival consists of three theatres including the Festival Theatre, the Court House Theatre, and the Royal George Theatre. The Festival Theatre seats 856 and is home to the Shaw’s large-scale productions. The Court House Theatre seating 327 is a historic site dating back to the 1840s and where the Shaw Festival began in 1962. The Royal George Theatre, also a historic site, was originally built as a cabaret house for the troops during World War I and was transformed into a beautiful theatre seating 328.
The combination of the three theatres produce 10 to 12 plays each season, with such performances as Arms and The Man by Bernard Shaw, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Love Among Russians by Anton Chekhov, and The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde. Whether you are an active theatre patron or a first time visitor, the Shaw Festival Theatre will show you the beauty and magic of the theatre.
