| During the years 1792 to 1796 Niagara on the lake was the capital of Upper Canada from 1792-1796 and was the centre of efforts to expand United States power into the fledgling province during the War of 1812-14. As a result the town has several museums and historic sites. The flagship museum is the Niagara Historical Museum that has been located in Niagara-on-the-Lake since 1906. Other historic site located within the area include,
Fort George, Mackenzie Printery & Newspaper Museum, McFarland House, The Niagara Apothecary, The Pumphouse, St. Mark's Church, The Stewart Homestead, Willowbank Heritage Estate, Laura Secord Homestead and Brock Monument.
