The Bell 407 is a single engine, seven-place helicopter designed to takeoff and land on any reasonably level terrain. Standard configuration provides for one pilot and six passengers. Passenger seat cushions can be removed or arranged and approximately 80 cubic feet of cargo can be carried internally at floor loading limit 75 pounds per foot. Also, the aft doors may be removed to permit carrying wide loads. In addition, a 16 cubic foot baggage compartment is located beneath the engine compartment with a maximum cargo weight of 250 pounds and a floor loading limit of 86 pounds per square foot, but this cargo weight limit is dependent upon the calculated center of gravity limits of the aircraft for the flight. Usable fuel capacity is 127.8 U.S. gallons distributed within two cells. In addition there is a 20 U.S. gallon extended range tank available.
The main rotor is a soft-in-plane flex beam type hub with four individually interchangeable blades. The blades and hub are all composite. The pitch change bearings and lead –lag dampers are elastomeric elements that require no maintenance and have benign failure modes. The grips of the plate and the pitch horns are made up of aluminum forgings for light weight and strength.
The tail rotor is a semirigid, delta hinged, two-blade design. The blades are composite and are mounted to a steel yoke.
The Bell 407 is powered by an Allison turbo shaft engine, Model 250-C47B that provides 674 shaft horsepower for takeoff and 630 shaft horsepower for maximum continuous operation.
The use of this light weight gas turbine engine, a high strength to weight ratio bonded honeycomb constructed airframe, simplifies dynamic components, and the soft mounted pylon is isolation system to dampen main rotor vibrations have produced a precision balance between performance, maintenance and capability.
The Bell 407 can be equipped with various landing gear configurations including: high skid landing gear, float landing gear (standard), or emergency flotation gear.
